Netflix has been launching many films and series that are scoring well in recent months. In December, that success already started with the film ‘Bird Box’ , which ensured a record number of viewers. The new series ‘You’ and ‘Sex Education’ are also doing well. A second season of You was already announced earlier this month. Sex Education has only been online for a week, but is also well on its way to becoming a great success. What makes these series so successful?
Otis is an average schoolboy in the British countryside. His mother (a fantastic role by Gillian Anderson ) is a sex therapist. Talking about sex is quite normal for his mother, Otis does not want to share everything with her. Nevertheless, he has learned enough from the conversations his mother has with her clients to start his own ‘sex clinic’ at school. Together with the rebellious Maeve, he gives advice to other students. At a certain point, his own lack of experience gets in his way.
The series is easy to watch and the characters are very strong. Otis’ friends and classmates are also featured a lot. The great thing about the series is that stereotypes are broken and sexuality is illuminated from all sides in a nice way. Some characters are out of touch or very uncomfortable, which is also funny and touching. As a viewer, you can empathize with almost every character. We see them from both their beautiful and surprising and less beautiful sides.
That this series scores well is logical in our opinion. Watch the trailer now and then start with the first episode. You will probably have rushed through the other seven as well.
Netflix has also scored very well with You . The series came online on Boxing Day and was well received. The announcement of a second season was therefore inevitable. In You we see Joe, who becomes obsessed with Guinevere and even starts stalking her.
The series has been watched a lot, but has also caused discussion. The stalking of main character Joe seems to be romanticized in the series at times. He is charming, but also traumatized. As a viewer, you still get sympathy for him.
We are curious about the second seasons of You and Sex Education. Have you not seen the series yet? There will surely be a (dark) winter day soon that lends itself perfectly to a day of Netflxing.
