In de toekomst zal Android niet alleen smartphones, tablets, tv’s en laptops besturen, maar het hele huishouden. Dat zegt Eric Schmidt, executive chairman van Google tijdens de CES. Je kunt dan smsjes sturen naar bijvoorbeeld je televisie, of naar je koelkast.
“What you really want to be able to do is when you walk into your house with an Android device, you have all these things with computers that adjust as necessary,” aldus Schmidt. “When you go into the family room, the television knows it’s you because of your Android device … If a text message comes to you, it goes to you to television, depending on whether that’s your preference or not. It all syncs together.”
De stap richting het huishouden is niet helemaal nieuw voor Google, de eerste stap is al gezet met Google TV. Volgens Schmidt wordt Android momenteel al gebruikt in koelkasten, alleen niet door Google.
Eigenlijk is het heel simpel volgens Schmidt, het enige wat je hoeft te doen is een consumentenproduct maken dat werkt. Hij spreekt zijn verbazing uit over producten die niet goed werken. “It is remarkable to me … all the time we’ve spent building products that aren’t very good, that take an enormous amount of technical knowledge to keep running. We’ve seen in the last few years a number of vendors make a product that’s so simple it just works. Underlying that simplicity is extraordinarily difficult and expensive engineering.”
Heel kort ging Schmidt ook nog in op de rechtzaak tussen Apple en Samsung, en Apple’s poging om de verkoop van de Galaxy Tab te stoppen. Hij is van mening dat je de consument een keus moet geven. Of je nu het ene product koopt, of het andere, het maakt volgens Schmidt niet uit. Als je maar een eerlijke evaluatie houdt in welke nu de beste is. “It’s called competition.”
